There are two techniques that are key to getting the look just right – the graded wash and the a simple technique for softening edges.
The graded wash is really a wet-in-wet wash but with additions of water and color to create gradual shifts of value, hue, intensity and even temperature. The graded washes in this lesson are easy with only variations in water and a single paint color.
Softening edges and lifting are similar techniques. Both need a ‘thirsty’ brush to lift off some water and some color.
