About These Lessons
The method and process offered here is easy. The mental challenge is not.
We are literal beings. The impluse to begin with subject is strong and is also our ‘safe’ place, so we go there even when trying not to.
Do your best to give in to the method and explore. Repeat the process until subjects start to emerge from the abstract.
What you’ll need:
- Drawing pencils
- Drawing Paper

Composition Secret Of California Scene Artists
Learn and use this composition idea for exciting, dynamic paintings
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
- Placing light and dark shapes for visual effect
- To ‘sense’ balance in the picture plane
- Create focal point and visual movement with contrast
About These Lessons
California Scene artists were known for their exciting depictions of life and landscape in their home state. A good portion of their works’ dynamic compositions were a result of the placement of light and dark shape ‘bits’ skillfully placed throughout the picture plane. The placement of light and dark bits created eye-catching and eye-moving contrasts resulted in paintings with unique dynamism for there time.
This series of tutorials is meant to help you understand and apply the method to your own work.
There’s a good chance you’ll find this challenging because the process will ‘offend’ your literal sense of subject. The antidote is study and practice.
A good bit of the exploration is based on the composition method offered in the lesson Composing The Picture Plane. It is a good idea to be familiar with that idea before taking this one.
