Paint Daffodils In A Yellow Pitcher

Create an impressionistic painting while capturing bright light on a yellow subject

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Work loosely for and impressionistic scene
  • Using warm / cool contrasts for subtle light shifts
  • Using bright / dull color contrasts for bright light and subtle shade

About This Lesson

This is the kind of subject that may lead you toward a tight and fussy approach to your painting.  Instead, we’ll use a loose approach to capture the essence of the subject.

Light is really the theme here. This lesson shows how to use shifts of temperature and contrasts of bright and dull hues to represent light even in an impressionistic scene

What you’ll need:

  • Brushes – Large, Medium and Small Flats, Rigger
  • Colors – Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue
  • Color Substitutes – a mixture of Cadmium Red and Cadmium Yellow for Orange; Dioxazine or Thalo Violet instead of mixing Ultramarine Blue and Permanent Alizarin Crimson
  • Watercolor paper – preferably Arches 140lb Cold Press cut to about 7″ x 10″ or so
