Paint A Cove In Morning Light
Learn The Power Of Simplicity
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
- Using A Simple Composition
- Using A Limited Palette
- Activating Empty Areas
About This Lesson
This lesson shows how to use a simple but powerful value arrangement to create dynamic painting.
The subject is a calm, peaceful scene. Creating a calm mood requires harmony. In this painting it is color harmony that supports the idea and is created a limited set of just four colors in the entire scene.
This scene contains two large, empty spaces – the sky and the quiet cove. We’ll activate and create visual interest in these shapes with subtle texture and color gradation.
What you’ll need:
- RECOMMENDED PAPER : Arches or Saunders 140lb Cold Press Watercolor Paper cut to about 7 1/2”h x 11”w
- BRUSHES : Large (#16 or larger), Medium (#12 or #14) and Small Rounds (#6 or #8) and A Rigger
- PAINT : Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet, Cadmium Orange
- PAINT SUBSTITUTES: For Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet – a combination of Permanent Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Sienna; For Cadmium Orange – a combination of Cadmium Red and Cadmium Yellow for Cadmium Orange
Self Evaluation
It is usually easy to know when something is “not right” with your painting. Often though, it is not easy to identify exactly what the problems are.
This lesson includes a video that will help you evaluate your painting. It will help you identify areas that may show problems with your technique, design, and value arrangement – especially dark value areas.
