Understanding Color Characteristics – Value

It is not difficult to understand the concept of value. It is a measure of the relative lightness or darkness of a color. It is also referred to as tone and is one of the characteristics of color.

Of all the characteristics of color, value is the most important one to understand and use when composing your paintings.  The range and placement of value will arguably have more effect on the viewers perception of light, form, space and mood than any other – hue, chroma or temperature.

What You’ll Need:

  • Chroma Color Chart – Made from the lesson Color Basics – Understanding Chroma
  • Value Scale! If you don’t have one, this lesson shows you how. Using a value scale is a good way to get to know your colors and their inherent value
