Watercolor Sketching For Building Skill
You might not create a masterpiece, but sketching – especially sketching fast – is great for building skill. It forces you to work fluidly, connect large shapes together and to really focus on your subject. All are great skills to develop.
This painting lesson is really a short lesson on doing a quick sketch. In this case, we’ll do it in two minutes. It doesn’t seem like enough time, even for the simplest composition.

What you’ll need
- Brushes – Medium Round
- Colors – Cadmium Red Light, Daniel Smith Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet, Cadmium Yellow Medium, or Indian Yellow, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna
- Watercolor paper – preferably Arches 140lb Cold Press cut to about 7″ x 11″ or so
