Ease Into Value Sketching

Value composition sketches are created in one of the preliminary stages of the painting process. Often called thumbnails because of their sze, they are small sketches done in pencil or gray washes. Thumbnail sketches are created solely to help createa dynamic underlying composition of large shapes and value. 

They are invaluable as a way to improve your painting. 

Many artists have difficulty adopting the idea and process of creating value sketches, mostly because it requires a change in the way we think about painting and our subjects. 

This short lesson offers a way to ease in to the process of value sketching. 

 

Materials Needed

  • A small pencil sketchbook – 4″ x 6″ is ideal
  • A pencil
